5G Plans for Pasadena Go Before City Committee on Tuesday

Pasadena’s Department of Information Technology (DoIT) will present an overview of plans to deploy wireless and 5th Generation (5G) technology in Pasadena during Tuesday’s online meeting of the City Council’s Municipal Services Committee.

A memo to the committee from DoIT Chief Information Officer Philip Leclair said department staff will also answer common questions about low signal strength and coverage gaps, and describe how the department collaborates with telecommunications carriers to improve service.

The memo also showed AT&T Wireless and Verizon Wireless are both involved in the rollout of 5G service in the city, which could mean having more cellular sites, although in smaller installations that could be added on to existing streetlights and utility poles.

5G uses the same cellular-based technology and transmitters/towers as previous generations, although it would be using new multiplexing technology and higher-frequency radio waves, the memo stated.

The technology will still be subject to Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) safety standards, which limit radio frequency exposure to 580 microwatts per square centimeter, applied since 1992, the report said.

The DoIT report also showed AT&T and Verizon are currently sharing strategies to increase coverage in the Pasadena area.

Combined, more than 150 cell sites are planned throughout the city in the next three years. Both carriers have met with DoIT, Public Works, and Transportation staff to discuss deployment and optimizing the permit process.

AT&T and Verizon’s cell networks may also require new fiber optic deployments, which will require additional investment, to support 5G.

The DoIT presentation is an information item on Tuesday’s agenda and may not lead to significant discussions that day.
