Community gatherings are planned in Pasadena and neighboring communities Tuesday for residents to gather with police officers, firefighters, sheriff’s deputies and other first responders as part of the annual National Night Out crime-prevention event.

The event began nearly four decades ago as a take-back-the-streets campaign led by residents holding gatherings in a show of community pride.

In Pasadena, National Night Out starts at 5 p.m. in front of the Pasadena Police Department headquarters at 207 N. Garfield Ave. The event will kick off with a free festive gathering and there will also be a series of neighborhood block parties that will be held throughout the city.

Residents can expect to rub shoulders with first responders from the Pasadena Police and Fire Departments as well as see numerous city officials. There will be free food, games and activities, giveaways and community resources information booths.

Mayor Victor Gordo, Interim Police Chief Jason Clawson, Fire Chief Chad Augustine, along with members of City Council are expected to be on hand.

It’s “a special time when the police and community come together as we continue to strengthen our partnerships, build on further collaboration, and get to know our neighbors,” Clawson told Pasadena Now.

“We all have deep connections in the community and hope to foster a safer future, together, making a better tomorrow. Your officers love Pasadena and commit to service before self as we strive to put the public back in public safety. Success is best when it is shared!” Clawson said.

Started in 1984, National Night Out is billed as “America’s night out against crime.” It is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch and co-sponsored by local municipalities and law enforcement agencies nationwide.

Over the years, the event has grown to include block parties. During the event, residents are encouraged to lock their doors, turn on their front house lights and join with neighbors, law enforcement and Neighborhood Watch leaders at local neighborhood events. Activities vary traditionally include food, police and fire department displays, live entertainment and a chance to interact with city officials.
