Sister Simone Campbell, SSS, a highly visible and nationally known advocate on social issues, will be the keynote speaker for the Women’s Symposium held by Ramona Convent Secondary School as part of the school’s 125th Anniversary Celebration.

The Women’s Symposium and breakfast will be held on Thursday, January 29 from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. at Ramona Convent, 1701 W. Ramona Road, in Alhambra. It is an event to honor and highlight the positive work of women in our society. The public is invited to attend.

A religious leader, attorney and poet, Sister Simone Campbell has been a major figure and advocate in debates over important national social issues like the Affordable Care Act, immigration reform and economic justice. She has been sought out for interviews on such national media programs as 60 Minutes, the Colbert Report and the Daily Show with Jon Stewart.

Sister Simone serves as Executive Director of NETWORK which lobbies on social justice issues in Washington D.C. In 2010, President Obama acknowledged Sister Simone’s critical interaction with Congress which helped win passage of the Affordable Care Act. In 2012, she also received national attention for her “Nuns on the Bus” tour which generated opposition to the “Ryan Budget” and its cuts to programs for the poor.

The Women’s Symposium and appearance of Sister Simone is one of a series of celebrations in 2014-15 to observe Ramona Convent’s 125th anniversary as the oldest Catholic all-girls’ school in Los Angeles County, still operating in its original location.

Founded in 1889 by the Sisters of the Holy Names, Ramona has graduated over 7,300 young women from Southern California and beyond. Ramona alumnae can be found in the halls of Congress and courtrooms, in business, at all levels of educational institutions and the offices of non-profit and community services organizations.

Tickets for the Women’s Symposium are $35.00 and include breakfast. Copies of Sister Simone’s book Nun on the Bus will be available for sale. For more information about Ramona Convent Secondary School or the Symposium, go to www.ramonaconvent.org.
