Neighbors Empowering Youth Provides Homeless Care Kits for Community

California nonprofit Neighbors Empowering Youth and its first robotics team Sunday assembled 100 homeless care kits consisting of masks, sanitizer, sanitizing wipes, socks, feminine hygiene products, water bottles, and bathroom tissue, to be distributed among needy homeless in the community.

Students, parents, and NEY staff worked together while socially distant outside NEY’s community technology center in Altadena.

According to the NEY website, closing the digital divide has been the group’s objective since its establishment as a 501c3 nonprofit service organization in 2000. NEY has specialized in training at-Risk Youth, disabled persons, immigrants, and seniors, as well as the under-employed, with most participants young adults 16 to 24 years old.

The group, which was founded by  John Smith in 1998, also provides low-cost computer equipment on its website, for the digitally underserved community, and has continued to be involved in a number of community-based collaborations serving middle and high school groups.

NEY has established numerous computer labs and learning centers for schools, after-school programs, churches, and day care centers, and other non-profit organizations. Among the groups NEY has served have been the Pasadena Unified School District,  where the group set up labs at Washington Middle School, Marshall Fundamental, Pasadena High school,  John Muir High School and Wilson Middle School, along with working with the Pasadena Education Foundation.

The organization has also worked with the “Mustangs on the Move” 21th Century after school program, Morningstar Baptist Church, Fountain of Life Church of the Nazarene, and New Revelations Church.
