The City of Pasadena has unveiled new public artwork titled “Rosa Geometrica” by the artist-team In Theory Art Collective as part of the City’s Rotating Public Art Program: Series IV.

The sculpture, located at the southwest corner of Bonnie Avenue and Del Mar Boulevard in District 7, is constructed from layers of powder-coated steel and features a large unfolding geometric flower rose in various hues of dichroic paint.

“Inspired by the historical significance and iconography of the rose, the artist-team juxtaposes the organic with the mathematical, and the symbolic with the scientific, producing a sculpture that echoes the diverse identities and cultures of Pasadena,” a description from the City of Pasadena relays.

The Rotating Public Art Program, established in 2011, aims to complement the permanency of both the Private Development and Capital Public Art Programs by placing works of art throughout the City that activate unusual locations, transforming small, often unnoticed areas into vibrant destinations for visitors and residents to discover.

The Cultural Affairs Division announced the installation of “Rosa Geometrica” and another artwork by artist Kellan Shanahan, “Arroyo,” in March 2024.

These site-responsive artworks are intended to enliven Pasadena with a dynamic visual experience for residents and visitors, while activating overlooked corners of the City.
