New Public Pickleball and Tennis Courts to Open Wednesday

Pickleball continues to ride waves of popularity in Pasadena. As part of efforts to respond to what some have called “America’s most popular sport” while not turning a blind eye to tennis, the City and school district jointly will open renovated courts for both sports Wednesday.

The McKinley School Pickleball and Tennis Courts will open with a Grand Opening on Wednesday, Oct. 26, now restoration work was completed.

The facility at 325 South Oak Knoll Ave. includes two dedicated pickleball courts, two dedicated tennis courts, and one hybrid court with striping to accommodate a tennis court or two additional pickleball courts.

In June, the Department of Public Works and a contractor started the restoration work due to the growing popularity of pickleball and an increasing demand for pickleball facilities.

The courts were severely cracked and the court surfacing and striping had deteriorated over the years. With help from the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department, the Public Works Department developed the conceptual design for the joint use of the courts including repairs.

According to a status report by the Public Works Department, the restoration work included resurfacing and striping, installation of court posts and netting, installation of a chain link fence and gate repairs. New benches and trash receptacles were also installed.

The courts will be available for public use Monday through Friday, from 4:30 p.m. to dusk, and Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to dusk. Earlier, the City and PUSD agreed on a Memorandum of Understanding about the shared use of tennis and pickleball courts at McKinley School. According to the MOU, the courts will be available for public use during non- school hours on weekends and evenings.

Parking for players will be available at the existing lot north of the school gym at the corner of El Molino Ave. and Del Mar Blvd.
