Friday marked two weeks without any COVID-19 deaths reported in Pasadena, as a single new infection was detected, officials said.

The last two fatalities reported in the city were documented on June 3. Both victims, however, had died months earlier and were added to the local death toll after their causes of death were confirmed, city officials said.

With only one new infection detected, the pandemic totals in Pasadena stood at 11,318 COVID-19 cases and 349 deaths, according to Pasadena Public Health Department data.

Over the prior week, the city saw an average of 1.6 new infections each day.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health reported 253 new infections and nine deaths on Friday, raising the county-wide pandemic totals to 1,247,216 cases of COVID-19 and 24,435 fatalities.

Hospitalizations continued to decline, with 220 patients being treated at county facilities, the agency said in a written statement. Twenty-four percent of them were being treated in intensive care units.

Friday’s testing positivity rate in L.A. County was recorded at 0.7%.

L.A. County Director of Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer urged safe practices over the holiday weekend.

“Many people will gather this weekend with family and friends to celebrate Father’s Day and Juneteenth. If you’re celebrating the holidays with someone elderly or with underlying health conditions, and they haven’t been vaccinated, I encourage you to celebrate safely outdoors with masks and distancing or virtually,” she said.

“While cases and other metrics remain low, COVID-19 transmission and severe health outcomes continue among unvaccinated people,” Ferrer added. “If your father, grandfather, great-grandfather, or other family member hasn’t had a chance to get vaccinated yet, now is a good time to take them to get vaccinated. Vaccinations remain widely available throughout L.A. County.”

State officials announced 1,295 detected infections on Friday, along with 57 deaths. In all, the state had seen 3,700,750 COVID-19 cases and 62,622 deaths.

The statewide average positivity rate over the prior week stood at 0.9%, according to California Department of Public Health data.

As of Friday, L.A. County represented 34% of California’s COVID-19 infections and 39% of the state’s deaths.
