No COVID-19 Deaths Seen in Pasadena for 8th Straight Day

Pasadena reported no COVID-19 deaths for an eighth straight day Thursday as officials continued their efforts to get vaccine injections into as many arms as possible.

With five new infections detected, new cases of the virus had not exceeded single digits for seven days, according to city data.

Pasadena’s overall tallies stood at 11,144 known infections and 335 fatalities.

Nearly 1,000 people were vaccinated during a clinic held at Pasadena City College, city spokeswoman Lisa Derderian said.

Due to limited supply, most of the vaccinations this week and next are second doses, she said.

City officials announced earlier this week that more than 51% of city residents over 16 had received at least one dose, while over 30% were fully vaccinated. The vaccines are currently only approved for patients over 16 years of age.

Eligibility for vaccination was expanded to residents over 50 years old on Monday.

Those unable to get a vaccine through their healthcare provider or local pharmacy were invited to fill out an online inquiry form to be notified when vaccine is available through the Pasadena Public Health Department. The form can be found at cityofpasadena.net/public-health/covid-19-vaccine/#covid-19-vaccine-inquiry.

In the week leading up to Wednesday, Pasadena reported an average of 4.4 new COVID-19 infections daily, records show.

Huntington Hospital reported treating 18 COVID-19 patients, with a single patient being housed in an intensive care unit.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health announced 757 new infections and 53 deaths, raising the county’s totals to 1,220,246 cases of the virus and 23,189 fatalities.

Just 650 COVID-19 patients were hospitalized in the county on Wednesday, officials said. A quarter of those people were in intensive care units.

With Easter fast approaching, L.A. County Director of Public Health once again implored caution on the part of the public to avoid a viral surge.

“Highly contagious variants are spreading throughout the country, and we continue to have concerns about the increased risk of transmission during spring break and holiday travel and parties,” she said in a written statement.

“Not only are people from different places gathering in large numbers in airports, but also at social gatherings when they are at their destination. These scenarios present the perfect opportunity for the COVID-19 virus to find new hosts and spread,” according to Ferrer.

“During this critical time in our recovery journey, we have to avoid taking part in activities that are risky and must continue to protect each other by following the safety measures,” she added.

State officials reported 2,234 new infections and 154 deaths on Wednesday, bringing the statewide totals to 3,570,660 infections and 58,090 fatalities.

The statewide average positivity rate over the prior week crept up to 1.9%. It had been recorded at 1.6% earlier in the week.

As of Thursday, L.A. County accounted for 34% of California’s COVID-19 cases and 40% of the state’s deaths.
