Black Law Enforcement Organization to Award Scholarships to Four Local Students

Published on Tuesday, June 1, 2021 | 12:16 pm

The National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE) will provide scholarships to four local students from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday,

Noah Griffin and Tia Reed of John Muir High School will receive the group’s Sharing Initiative Community Scholarship and the Wallace Family Community Scholarship, respectively.

Monrovia High School student Vanessa Mills will also receive a $1,000 Wallace Family Community Scholarship, and Megan Tieu of San Gabriel High School will receive a Sharing Initiative Community Scholarship.

The scholarships are awarded to students who have demonstrated academic achievement, leadership and exceptional service to the community.

Each scholarship is a one-time award offered to a graduating senior residing and/or attending high school within the boundaries of NOBLE’s San Gabriel Valley Chapter.

The Sharing Initiative (formerly the Pasadena Share-a-Meal Program) was founded by Retired Firefighter Steven Lawhorn and Pasadena Sandwich Company Owner Meghan Fink. The funds for The Sharing Initiative Community Scholarship were provided by the Stephen E. Fink Memorial Fund.

The Rodney D & Donnetha Wallace Family Community Scholarship was created by former Pasadena Police Officer Rodney Wallace and his family.

The pandemic impacted NOBLE’s fundraising efforts and forced the cancellation of this year’s event.

Over the past eight years, NOBLE-SGV has overseen the distribution of more than $45,000 in scholarship awards to high school students across the region.

In 2020, the group awarded $12,000 to local students, according to a released statement by the group.

NOBLE says it has long served as the “Conscience of Law Enforcement,” and the San Gabriel Valley Chapter (SGV) has played an integral role in accomplishing this mission through outreach programs that not only educate but also nurture, strengthen and validate youth.
