Nosh on Red Vines with a Side of Nostalgia at Twohey’s

Some things go together like peanut butter and jelly, Sonny and Cher, chips and salsa, Red Vines and Strawberry Shortcake. The last combination may seem a bit novel but don’t scoff until you’ve sampled the glorious combination of Red Vine licorice and Twohey’s signature desserts.

Twohey’s Restaurant has been serving the Pasadena area since 1943 and they’re teaming up with the iconic candy, Red Vines, to celebrate their 75th anniversary in a bold, sweet way. Twohey’s is known for their nostalgic hamburger stand fare including, burgers, onion rings and hand-dipped fountain specialties like ice cream sundaes.

“It’s the loyalty of our guests that keeps us alive,” said Charlie Christos, manager at Twohey’s. The Christos family acquired Twohey’s in 1997 and is responsible for a series of remodels and an updated menu. They plan to open a second location on Foothill Boulevard in Pasadena this coming fall. “What makes Twohey’s great is that families have been coming here for generations – it’s lively [but] with a nod to the past.”

This year also marks the debut of the American Licorice Company’s Red Vines® California Collection®, the first package of seven different licorice pieces in both red and black. The Made in California Red Vines tour started in San Francisco and will end at the Stagecoach Music festival. Be on the lookout for the iconic VW Bus, a 1964 11-door model, owned and driven by Andrew Carmona and two Red Vine ambassadors.

Twohey’s Restaurant Executive Chef Lalo Talamantes, created two limited edition Red Vine desserts with the California Collection to showcase the versatility of this classic candy. Choose from a StrawVine-berry Short Cake or Red Vines® Licorice Cherry Pie Vine Shake.

“I wanted to make something traditional with a twist,” said Executive Chef Lalo Talamantes. He adds that it wasn’t difficult to incorporate the unique taste of Red Vines into desserts. Sip on the Red Vines® Licorice Cherry Pie Vine Shake which combines homemade cherry pie, vanilla ice cream and Red Vines® infused sauce plus a garnish of whipped cream. Or try the StrawVine-berry Short Cake. This fluffy sponge cake is layered with fresh strawberries and Red Vines infused sauce, topped with whipped cream.
