Paid Sustainability Internships At Rose Bowl Begin This Month

A Pasadena-based company specializing in organic waste diversion is offering paid student internships, starting this month, to gain experience in the field of environmental sustainability while working at the iconic Rose Bowl stadium.

Interested high school juniors, seniors and college bound recent graduates were urged to contact 301 Organics as soon as possible, as an online orientation for selected interns is scheduled to begin Monday, company Founder and Principal Consultant Christine Lenches-Hinkel said.

Interns will be able to view a recording of the orientation through Aug. 16 before training begins on Aug. 26, organizers said. Work is to begin Aug. 28.

“We’re kind of on a crunch to recruit student interns — anyone interested in sustainability over at the Rose Bowl Stadium — now that the events are back we’re and going into football season. There’s a lot to do,” she said.

UCLA is slated to return to the stadium for its season-opening game on Aug.28.

“At 301 Organics, we’re part of their sustainability programs and helping the stadium become and stay compliant with some environmental laws around solid waste and food recovery and diversion,” according to Lenches-Hinkel.

“Each event requires quite a bit of manpower to make the program work, so we are recruiting interns,” she said. “It’s a great opportunity to work side by side with professionals in the field, like myself, but also gives individuals the behind-the-scenes exposure to the events management world or the sports management world as well, and how these venues are going green and doing their sustainability efforts.”

Projects 301 Organics has completed at the Rose Bowl in the past include multiple food waste trials, a dehydrator trial “and [testing] the feasibility of diverting the pre-processed food to worms,” the company said in a written statement.

“In addition, 301 Organics successfully orchestrated the design, construction and start-up of a green waste composting trial on-site using the forced aerated static pile method (FASP) powered by solar panels,” the statement added.
