The clock is ticking in District 3.

With just hours left to turn in paperwork, Incumbent Justin Jones is the only person that has successfully filed the necessary signatures to apply for the seat in District 3.

Luz Marina Miranda and Brandon Lamar have also pulled papers to collect the necessary 25 signatures from registered voters living in the district.

As of 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, the City Clerk’s website does not list either as having qualified for the seat.

Jones and Miranda pulled papers on Nov. 7. Smith pulled papers on Nov. 28.

Miranda previously answered emails from Pasadena Now, but when asked earlier this week if she was collecting signatures she did not respond.

Papers must be turned in by the close of business on Thursday, Dec. 1.

Qualified candidates are scheduled to be interviewed for the City Council after Dec. 12 when the new City Council is sworn in.

The City Council will discuss the process for appointment early next month.

The council picked Jones for the seat in September, but must conduct the process again to fill a second vacancy left by the death of Councilmember John Kennedy.

Kennedy died in July and left two vacancies on the City Council. The first one covered his current term which ends on Dec. 12 and the second one covered the term Kennedy won shortly before his death in the June Primary.

Several District 3 members have decried the process, but the City Charter does not allow for a special election.
