The City Hall plaza in Pasadena served as the backdrop for a Summer Solstice Celebration on June 21. Representatives of the PASADENA 100 Coalition, along with citizens, elected officials, climate justice advocates, physicians, and scientists, gathered to promote the power of solar energy and spotlight Pasadena Water and Power’s (PWP) commitment to 100% carbon-free energy by 2030.
The event featured performances by the Towne Singers, Lineage Dancers and a “Let the Sun Shine In”sing-along led by Sylvia Holmes of Compassionate Arts in Action.
Members of the PASADENA 100 Coalition organizations delivered short “sunburst talks” affirming the importance of reaching the 100% carbon-free energy goal as directed by the Pasadena City Council in its Climate Emergency Resolution of January 30.
Featured speakers included Cynthia Cannady – PASADENA 100, Dr. Marc Futernick – Physicians for PASADENA 100, Rick Cole – former Mayor of Pasadena, and representatives from Congresswoman Judy Chu and Assemblyman Chris Holden.
Cannady and Futernick spoke about the harmful effects of climate change on health conditions and the need for increased renewable energy and reduced electricity demand.
The City of Pasadena is currently developing a state-mandated long-range electric power plan called the Integrated Resource Plan (IRP).
On January 30, the Pasadena City Council unanimously passed a resolution declaring a climate emergency and setting a policy goal for PWP to source 100% of Pasadena’s electricity from carbon free sources by the end of 2030.
