The Pasadena Art Alliance on Wednesday announced it has awarded $315,000 in grants to 26 Los Angeles area non-profit arts organizations. The grants will support contemporary arts exhibitions and projects in the San Gabriel Valley and throughout Los Angeles County.
The PAA has been fostering the appreciation of contemporary visual art in Southern California for over 60 years, with grants totaling almost $7 million to date.
“We are delighted to support these extraordinary visual arts exhibitions and projects,” said PAA Grants Chair Jennifer Baxter. “In such challenging times, we are inspired by the creativity, dedication and resilience of our grant recipients. During the Fall of 2020, the pandemic necessitated virtual site visits with our applicants, but with the re-openings this Spring, we now look forward to experiencing their exhibitions in person.”

This year’s grantees include an impressive list of established and emerging non-profit visual arts organizations. On the list are four Pasadena institutions which received grants: Armory Center for the Arts, ArtCenter College of Design, Pasadena City College, USC Pacific Asia Museum.

The PAA was unable to stage its annual festive Grants Reception in honor of grantees due to COVID-19 guidelines. Instead, this year grantees received their funding via mail, and expressed their excitement and gratitude.
“The Armory expresses its sincere gratitude to the PAA for its generous support of our exhibition programming and for its deep commitment to the vitality and adventurous spirit of the visual arts in the greater Los Angeles area,” said Irene Georgia Tsatsos, Director of Exhibition Programs/Chief Curator at the Armory Center for the Arts in Pasadena.
Suzanne Isken, Executive Director of the Craft Contemporary in Los Angeles added, “As an arts institution with a very long history in Los Angeles, we are thrilled to continue to provide the public with an intimate setting for creative exploration. Thanks to longtime support from PAA, Craft Contemporary will continue to offer a unique lens for examining contemporary art via its materials, messages, and processes.”
Baxter thanked her Assistant Grants Chair, Carolyn Siegal, and PAA President Judy Penner for their leadership and partnership in steering the grants process this year, along with the 18 “brilliant, hardworking” members of the Grants Committee.
Established in 1955, the purpose of the Pasadena Art Alliance is to foster appreciation for contemporary visual arts in Southern California by supporting artists, exhibitions, educational programs and art-oriented, non-profit institutions. Funds raised through an annual benefit and other events provide 100% of the funding for the annual grants and awards presented to deserving Southern California non-profit arts institutions.
