Pasadena-Based Sleepypod Celebrates 15th Year Anniversary

Over a decade ago, Michael Leung and Melony Lee decided to make their own carrier for their first kitten because they were disappointed with the products available in the market.

Little did they know that the pet carrier they invented, which they planned on using for their travels with their kitten, would soon be liked not only by legions of pets but by their owners as well.

“Since I am a product designer by trade and Melony is a graphic designer, both having earned our degrees from ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena, we set out to develop a carrier that thoughtfully considered the needs of both the cat and its owner,” said Leung.

“As enthusiastic as she (cat) was to travel in it, on our travels we also received a lot of enthusiastic comments about our invention,” he said.

Now 15 years old, Pasadena-based firm Sleepypod, born after the creation of Leung and Lee’s pet carrier, is still thriving in the market.

The firm marked its anniversary October 15.

Speaking to Pasadena Now, Leung said he feels amazed and humbled about the continued success of Sleepypod.

He added that reaching the milestone was impossible without the support of “forward-thinking, innovative product seekers.”

After their pet carrier invention, the two tested other products in the market and concluded these were not providing safe methods to transport dogs and cats in vehicles.

So they set out to design multifunctional carriers that can be used as safe car seats and cozy napping spots at home or on the go.

Today, the firm offers various pet travel and safety products for dogs and cats including carriers and harnesses that are crash-tested and certified, leashes and collars that are strength-tested, and food bowls that are made from baby-safe BPA-free silicone.

Leung said the company will continue to create innovative products for their customers.

“Our team is constantly developing product designs that we hope will extend our Sleepypod heritage of helping to improve the lives of furry family members, while at the same time enhancing the lives of their owners.”

“We look forward to creating more innovations to improve animal and human relationships in the years to come.”
