Pasadena-based Tetra Tech Wins $110 Million USACE Dam Safety and Risk Management Contract

Tetra Tech, Inc., a Pasadena-based high-end consulting and engineering services provider, has been awarded a joint venture multiple-award contract by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District to assess and manage risks for dams and levee systems in the western United States for a period of up to five years.

Under the contract, Tetra Tech will perform site characterization studies, environmental assessments, engineering evaluations, and hydrologic analyses related to the safety of dams and levee systems. The Tetra Tech team will use advanced analytics and predictive modeling to assess structural integrity and design risk-based management approaches during the course of the work, according to a company statement.

“Increased impacts from climate change have placed the nation’s dam and levee systems under additional stress from extreme weather events,” said Tetra Tech Chairman and CEO Dan Batrack. “Tetra Tech looks forward to continuing to use our ‘Leading with Science’ approach to support the USACE in reducing flood risks, maintaining public safety, and restoring ecosystems.”

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District owns and operates 17 dams and reservoirs in California’s Central Valley, which provide multiple benefits including flood risk management, water storage, hydropower, fish and wildlife conservation, and recreation.

The Sacramento District also routinely inspects and performs risk assessments on approximately 1,600 miles of levees and other flood risk management features within its area of responsibility to monitor their overall condition, identify deficiencies, verify that needed maintenance is taking place, and provide information about the levee to communities who live and work behind them.

These levees in the Sacramento District’s Levee Safety Program are spread out across California, Nevada, Utah, and Colorado. More than one million people live or work behind these levees, and over $165 billion worth of public and private property exists.
