Raphael Henderson, the incoming chairman of the Board of Directors of the Pasadena Chamber of Commerce was inaugurated on Friday, June 24 in a ceremony at the Langham Huntington Hotel.

“I want to ensure that we continue to support the small business community in Pasadena and surrounding areas by sharing the wealth of resources and capabilities,” Henderson told Pasadena Now.

“I think we (PCC) have to do a better job of informing the community of what’s available and strongly encourage them to take advantage of our resources.”

Henderson said he would be the fourth African-American to serve as Chair of the Pasadena Chamber of Commerce in its hundred year history.

As the new Board Chair, Henderson vowed to ensure that the organization will help small businesses in Pasadena navigate amid accelerating inflation as gasoline prices hit a record high and the cost of food soared.

“The chamber is open to all in the community and we strongly support and encourage the equity, inclusion, and diversity, and we want to make certain that all individuals or actually, all businesses within the community know that they’re not only welcome, but they’re encouraged to take part in all of the opportunities that the chamber has,” Henderson said.

Henderson said the chamber will collaborate with city officials, the private and the public sectors to address pressing concerns of businesses, like inflation and material supply chain shortages.

“I think what’s important is that there’d be a collaborative approach to addressing those specific concerns. And we would collaborate with our local city officials and resources, as well as the outside or the private resources, just a joint collaboration between the public and private sector to address those concerns. The answers and the support is going to be through joint efforts. And we just need to bring those two entities together to help solve those concerns.”

Speaking about the future of Chamber of Commerce in Pasadena, Henderson said that the steadfast organization will be “instrumental in providing guidance and support to the small business community.”

Henderson is District Manager for Wells Fargo Bank in charge of the North Hills Region that includes the communities of Azusa, Claremont, Duarte, Glendora, La Verne, Monrovia and San Dimas.

He currently serves in various non-profit boards including Hillsides, the Rose Bowl Aquatic Center and the Lake Avenue Education Foundation. He also serves as a commissioner on the California State Senate Advisory Committee on Cost Control.

He was Chamber Board Chair-Elect of the Pasadena Chamber when John Leano of Bryan’s Cleaners and Laundry was serving as the Chamber Board Chair. Henderson has served on the Chamber Board since 2015 and has been Treasurer and a member of the Executive Committee since 2019.

Henderson will serve as the Chamber Board Chair until June 30, 2023.
