A local clinic testing for the Coronavirus is now using a new molecular point-of-care test for the detection of the virus, that can deliver positive results in as little as five minutes and negative results in 13 minutes.

Carbon Health’s Pasadena clinic is using the Abbot ID Now COVID-19 box as of Tuesday morning.

Molecular testing technologies helps detect the presence of the virus by identifying a small section of the virus’ genome, then amplifying that portion until there’s enough for detection.

According to the manufactures of the test, the process can cut testing wait time from hours, if not days, to minutes.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has provided emergency use authorization for the new testing.

The test can be done through a nasal, oropharyngeal or nasopharyngeal swab.

“The test uses molecular technology to detect the presence of COVID-19,” according to released statement. “The test results have similar accuracy to those run by the commercial labs like Quest, LabCorp, and WestPac but the results of the Rapid COVID-19 Test can be obtained while you wait in the clinic in as little as 5 minutes.”

The Abbott test was introduced by President Trump last week.

“That’s a whole new ballgame,” Trump said. “I want to thank Abbott Labs for the incredible work they’ve done. They’ve been working around-the-clock.”

However, so far only 5,000 of the testing units have been shipped and many hospitals are backlogged.

Testing remains a crucial step in controlling the novel COVID-19 pandemic. Continuing to supply healthcare providers with new technologies to help curb the spread of infection is a top priority for public health officials and healthcare providers.

Carbon Health recently launched a web tool to assess its patients.

If a patient who takes the assessment is identified as needing additional screening, a doctor from Carbon Health will reach out to them to coordinate further assessment and COVID-19 testing. Carbon Health strongly recommends patients take the Coronavirus assessment tool and book an appointment prior to coming into a clinic..

The clinic has been providing testing since March 5.
