The Pasadena Community Foundation has added 12 new first-year Pasadena City College students to its PCF Scholars program, which provides academic, financial and social support to participants as they pursue higher education, the foundation has announced.

The foundation likened itself to “proud parents” of the scholars in the program, which has grown to include 28 participants since it was launched in 2019, the PCF said in a written statement.

The students are selected for the program as they transition from Pasadena Unified School District high schools to Pasadena City College, representatives explained.

It was founded “in response to national data that shows dropout rates are very high at community colleges, especially among low-income students,” the statement said.

“PCF Scholars supports students at PUSD high schools who need additional resources to meet their educational goals at PCC,” the statement continued. “Participants receive financial assistance and ongoing wraparound academic and social support from counselors.”

Along with partnering organizations, PCF Scholars helps students with everything from the college application process and financial aid procurement to tutoring services, according to the PCF.

“They also ensure that each student forms a meaningful relationship with an informed adult who provides holistic counseling and helps the student set and meet their educational goals,” the statement said.

PCF Scholars Program Director Kate Clavijo said she was proud of the students in the program and the dedication they have shown.

“In the last year, due to the pandemic, colleges across the country experienced steep declines in attendance and increased rates of failing grades,” Clavijo said. “It’s a testament to PCF Scholars that 80% of the participants maintained enrollment during this time. Despite the isolation and hardship of the past year, our students showed remarkable resilience. The PCF Scholars program increased their comfort level with college and helped them stay motivated and persist in their education.”

A recent study of the program conducted by PCF found that participation resulted in higher grade point averages.
