Pasadena Farmers’ Market Celebrates Over 40 Years of Serving the Community

The market, which began in 1980, has become a vital link between local farmers and residents, offering fresh produce and supporting charitable causes

The Pasadena Farmers’ Market, a beloved institution in the city for over four decades, is celebrating its longevity and impact on the community.

Operating at two locations, Villa Parke on Tuesday mornings and Victory Park on Saturday mornings, the market has been connecting local farmers with consumers since 1980. In response to the success of the Villa Parke location, a second location opened at Victory Park in 1984.

“Farmers’ markets introduce us to the hardworking farmers who grow food for our families,” said Gretchen Sterling, manager of the Pasadena Certified Farmers’ Markets. “Farmers work long days, deal with changing weather conditions, and travel a long way to be at our markets weekly.”

In addition to supporting the local economy, the Pasadena Farmers’ Market has made significant contributions to various community needs throughout its history. The organization has donated clothing and school supplies for students, covered summer camp and swim lesson fees, and provided transportation to special events, ensuring that generations of Pasadena’s youth have access to educational and extracurricular opportunities.

Since 1995, the City of Pasadena Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department has been solely responsible for the farmers’ markets’ operations. The program’s success has generated surplus funding, which is used to support recreation programs at the City’s four community centers.

“Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department is proud to support such a meaningful and long-standing program,” said Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department Director Koko Panossian. “The Pasadena Farmers’ Market aligns with our mission to offer affordable resources, encourage healthy choices, and foster connections within the community.”

The Pasadena Farmers’ Market not only bolsters the local economy but also promotes environmental sustainability by reducing the distance food travels from farm to table. The emphasis on local, often organic, produce contributes to healthier ecosystems and reduces the environmental impact associated with large-scale agriculture.

The market’s adaptability and resilience were put to the test during the COVID-19 pandemic, which necessitated operational changes and increased safety measures. Despite these challenges, the Pasadena Farmers’ Market continued to provide access to fresh food and serve as a vital resource for the community.

As the Pasadena Farmers’ Market celebrates over 40 years of operation, it remains a cornerstone of the City’s commitment to fostering a healthy, sustainable, and connected community.
