The Pasadena Fire Department opened up a lateral recruitment period Thursday in search of experienced firefighters and firefighter-paramedics to fill 21 vacancies, officials said.

Open houses are scheduled July 22 and July 27 for interested, qualified candidates to learn more about being a firefighter in Pasadena, according to the department.

Pasadena is “a great place to work,” according to Pasadena Fire Deputy Chief Tim Sell.

“We have a very diverse response space. We have wildlands, we have the Rose Bowl, we have Caltech, we have JPL, we have Old Town, we have the Lake Avenue shops,” he said. “There are just so many different opportunities to serve in the Fire Department here and in different types of responses that, for a lot of people that may work for other departments, that’s a very attractive thing.”

“We have a family-style atmosphere. We are a diverse department,” Sell said.

“It truly is a world-class city and has world-class offerings that other cities just don’t have,” he added.

Prior to taking the helm of the Pasadena Fire Department earlier this year, Chief Chad Augustin served as deputy chief at the Sacramento Fire Department.

“I came from a large metropolitan fire department up in Sacramento, and Pasadena, about a third the size, offers every single service that a large metropolitan fire department provides, which is really exciting and rare for a smaller sized department,” according to Augustin.

Pasadena firefighters work on a so-called 48-96 schedule, in which they’re on-duty for 48 hours, then off for 96, Sell explained.

Lateral applicants must have at least 18 months experience working as a firefighter in California, officials said.

To fill all available vacancies, “We anticipate being in continuous recruitment for the next several years,” Sell said.

Recruitment efforts for entry-level positions were being planned for early next year, he added.

Those interested in registering to take part in one of the upcoming open houses were encouraged to email Pasadena  Battalion Chief Miller at CMiller@cityofpasadena.net.
