The Pasadena Fire Department’s Training Division has been recognized by the State Fire Marshal as an Accredited Local Academy, officials said.

The announcement was made Thursday in the form of a newsletter issued by City Manager Steve Mermell.

PFD Acting Chief Anthon Bagan said it was an honor for the department to be recognized by state officials and peers.

“I am proud of all members who helped the Pasadena Fire Department achieve recognition as an Accredited Local Fire Academy with the Office of the California State Fire Marshal, State Fire Training,” Bagan said.

“Now that the Pasadena Fire Department is recognized as an Accredited Local Academy, our training division can deliver the curriculum of the California Fire Service Training and Education System which leads to professional certification from firefighter to fire chief,” Bagan said in a written statement.

Much of the training activities will take place at Fire Station 33, located on North Lake Avenue, which houses equipment including a tower used by firefighters to practice their craft, officials said.

The department first applied to be recognized as an academy in early 2020, according to the newsletter. The State Fire Marshal’s Office notified the city of its decision earlier this month.

“The Pasadena Fire Department will be joining only 24 other fire departments in the state of California with this special designation which also includes the cities of Burbank and Glendale,” it stated.

But that was only one project in the works geared to molding the next generation of firefighters, according to Bagan.

“Other elements we are currently working towards is a partnership with the [Pasadena Unified School District] and a Fire Internship Program,” the chief added. “These new elements combined with our existing efforts and programs such as the Fire Academy Cadet Sponsorship Program, the Fire Explorer Program, the Emergency Medical Services Reserve Program, and our Community Emergency Response Team will provide firefighter candidates with the resources they need to pursue a career as a Pasadena firefighter.”
