The organizing committee of the Pasadena City Golf Championship had decided to postpone the tournament, scheduled to have started Friday, March 20, due to the ongoing COVID-19 emergency.
As it turns out, the County’s weekend decision to prohibit golf course activity sealed tyhe tournament’s fate.
The tournament, which a group of Pasadena organizations planned to reinstate this year after a hiatus in 2019, was supposed to conclude Sunday. The organizers said they will be announcing a new date within the next 30 days. They expect to be able to push through with the event within the year.
Full registration fee refunds will be processed for players that request it, the committee said.
“For players that don’t request a refund, your registration will be valid for the rescheduled date,” an advisory posted on the tournament website said. “If for any reason you need to cancel once the new date is announced, we will process a full refund at that time.”
Refunds can be requested via the event website, www.2020pasadenacity.
The Pasadena City Golf Championship, which dates back to 1929, has been considered as the annual rite-of-passage for Southern California golfers looking to test their game. This year’s event would be the 84th championship, open to players from 18 years old and above with a 12-month low handicap index ranging from 3.1 to 21.4.
A World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR)-counting event and Southern California Golf Association (SCGA) Player of the Year points tournament, the tournament’s proceeds are intended to support youth development programs for the First Tee of Greater Pasadena.
