Pasadena Media and content partner Innovate Pasadena won a 2021 Western Access Video Excellence (WAVE) Award from the Alliance for Community Media Western Region in the category of Underserved Voices for an episode of “Innovate Pasadena Presents” featuring deaf NASA engineer Johanna Lucht.

The episode was hosted and co-produced by Innovate Pasadena Marketing and Event Manager Ka-Yun Lau.

“We at Pasadena Media are very proud of being chosen to receive a video excellence award for Underserved Voices by our peers. We strive to be inclusive and to serve all of our diverse community. Our focus has always been television for the community, by the community,” said Pasadena Media Executive Director and CEO George Falaradau.

The “Innovate Pasadena Presents” TV series features professionals impacting the ecosystem of innovation in arts, design, media, technology, science, astronomy, and entrepreneurship.

The interview hosted by Lau, who is also deaf, focused on the life of Lucht, NASA’s first deaf engineer to carry out an active role in a NASA control center during a crewed research flight.

The interview was conducted completely in American Sign Language, yet broadcast and live-streamed with captioning and voiceover for the hearing audience.

“Innovate Pasadena Presents” airs at 6:30 p.m. Thursdays on the Arroyo Channel, found on Charter Spectrum Channel 32 in Pasadena and parts of Altadena, and AT&T U-verse channel 99 where it’s available throughout Los Angeles County.

Viewers can also stream the program live or on video-on-demand at pasadenamedia.org, via the free Pasadena Media app for Roku, Amazon Fire TV, and Apple TV devices, and on Pasadena Media’s social media platforms.

Pasadena Media is the nonprofit community access television station for the city of Pasadena that offers a wide spectrum of diverse and dynamic local programming for the people and by the people. Pasadena Media also provides hands-on video production experience and job skills training.
