So far the Coronavirus pandemic has led to fewer calls for service at the Pasadena Police Department.

Pasadena police have seen a 25 percent decrease in calls for service over the past two weeks since City Manager Steve Mermell declared a local emergency in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“People are looking out for each other and their neighbors, many businesses are closed and schools not in session, so there are less calls for service for both police and fire at this time,” said Public Information Officer Lisa Derderian.

According to Derderian, all PPD officers are working normal shifts. So far the department has not made any arrests related to price gouging.

“We are monitoring all of the listed businesses in an attempt of mitigating any criminal activities,” Derderian said.

The trend is not just isolated to Pasadena. The Los Angeles Police Department reported that theft and burglaries dropped 19 percent between Feb. 23 to March 21. Violent offenses are down 14 percent as of March 25 compared to the same time last year.

Chicago and New York have reported similar decreases.

The Pasadena Police Department began screening calls on March 16 that would require officers to come in contact with callers.

Dispatchers are asking callers if they have returned from another country, if they have had flu-like symptoms and related questions.

In certain cases, dispatch is asking if they can take more information over the phone so officers will know before they go in whether they need to take extra precautions.

At this time it is not known if any Pasadena police officers have tested positive for COVID-19 or are in self-isolation.

“Due to HIPPA we will not discuss testing, quarantine or isolation,” Derderian said. “The patrol division is at full complement at this time.  All other officers/sworn personnel, including detectives, are prepared to assist with patrol duties if the need arises.”
