Pasadena Police Join “No-Shave November” to Fight Cancer

The Pasadena Police Department has once again joined a national campaign to raise funds, as well as awareness, to combat cancer by foregoing razors for the month, officials said.

“No-Shave November” invited participants to show solidarity for cancer survivors by growing out facial hair, raising donations, or both, Pasadena police Lt. William Grisafe said.

While mustaches are generally allowed by Pasadena police policy, within guidelines, beards are not, officials said. Like countless law enforcement agencies across the country, Pasadena police make an exception in November for the charity campaign.

The PPD generally sees a strong response to the program, which has been ongoing nationwide for more than a decade, he said.

“We usually have close to 100 people who participate in growing beards and/or donating,” he said. “Once a police employee donates, they get their ‘No Shave’ pin to wear on their uniform.”

The proceeds from this year’s event will benefit top cancer research and prevention institutions including the Prevent Cancer Foundation, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and Fight Colorectal Cancer, the Police Department said in a written statement.

Nationally, more than $10 million has been raised through the campaign, officials said.

“The Pasadena Police Department has been participating in this charity for the past several years and through their continued support has raised thousands of dollars towards the fight against cancer,” the statement said. “Last year the department donated almost $2,500 and our goal for this year is $10,000.”

Police had raised more than $4,000 in donations as of Monday.
