Pasadena Police Monitoring Situation at Local Gun Store

Turner's Outdoorsman can remain open for now

On Tuesday, Pasadena Police Chief John Perez said that the city’s police department is monitoring a local gun store in conjunction with the state’s Safe at Home order.

The order mandates all non-essential businesses close to help preserve social distancing. However, so far no decision has been made on gun stores, according to Perez.

Perez said he drove by Turner’s Outdoorsman on Arroyo Parkway to personally assess things on Tuesday.

“We are monitoring the situation,” Perez told Pasadena Now. “There is not a wave of people there buying guns,” Perez said. “We are waiting for some guidance from the state. They know our concern but a determination has not been made.”

A store manager at Turner’s Outdoorsman answered the phone on Tuesday, but would not say if the store was open or would be closing and referred all calls to the company’s headquarters located in San Bernardino County.

No one picked up the phone when Pasadena Now called the business headquarters.

It is not known if other outlets that sell firearms remain open.

According to the city’s order people are required to remain at home as much as possible and practice social distancing. Like the orders released by the county, Los Angeles and Long Beach, the city’s order does not require gun stores to close, however gun stores do not appear on the list of essential businesses that can continue to operate.

The mandates were issued to help stop the spread of the deadly COVID-19 virus. As of Tuesday afternoon at least 414,000 people were infected globally. In Pasadena, six people have tested positive for the virus.

The order has been revised once. In that revision, beauty shops and barber shops were ordered to close.

Earlier in the day, Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva demanded gun stores shut down or be fined, or risk losing their business license.

Villanueva said Tuesday that the stores are violating the county and state order that only allows essential businesses to operate during the Safe at Home order.

Pasadena has its own police force, and Villanueva cannot close businesses here.

“We will be closing them, they are not an essential function,” Villanueva told Fox11 about gun shops. “I’m a supporter of the Second Amendment, I’m a gun owner myself, but now you have the mixture of people that are not formerly gun owners and you have a lot more people at home.
