Pasadena Police on the Hunt for Impaired Drivers Over Labor Day Weekend

An extra police enforcement period coinciding with the Labor Day weekend is underway and will continue through Monday, officials said.

The extra enforcement period began Aug. 21, police said in a written statement. An even higher level of patrols will be fielded on Friday.

“The dangers of drinking and driving are very real,” said Pasadena police Lt. Max Dahlstein. “That includes drugs that affect your ability to drive. Please be responsible and think of your family and friends before considering driving when you are not in a position to do so safely.”

The effort is part of the national campaign, “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.”

“While less people are traveling, impaired driving continues to be a problem,” according to the police statement. “During the Fourth of July holiday, the [California Highway Patrol] made 738 arrests for DUI over a 54-hour period.”

Alcohol, prescription drugs, marijuana, and over-the-counter medications have the potential to impair drivers, police added. Anyone who spots an intoxicated driver is urged to call 911.

“Safety is paramount, but especially during the COVID-19 pandemic,” Dahlstein said. “We are all in this together and want everyone to be as safe as possible when they are out. One way to do that is by not driving impaired.”

Funding for the campaign is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
