Congresswoman Judy Chu has named Lori Touloumian, Principal of Pasadena Unified’s Marshall Fundamental Secondary School, as Educator of the Year at the 2024 Congressional Leadership Awards.

Touloumian, a 25-year veteran of the District, was honored for her transformative leadership and innovative educational programs.

Touloumian has served in various roles within Pasadena Unified, including teacher, coordinator, assistant principal, and principal.

Under her guidance since 2021, Marshall Fundamental has achieved a remarkable 97% graduation rate and implemented several successful initiatives, according to Pasadena Unified.

The Summer SOAR program, a bridge initiative offering specialized courses like Wellness, Intro to 6th Grade, AP Prep, and Senior Defense, has been particularly impactful, according to the Dstrict. Its success has led to integration into the school-wide instructional program throughout the year.

Touloumian has also revitalized the school’s arts programs, contributing to a well-rounded educational experience for students. Her efforts reflect a commitment to fostering academic resilience and creating meaningful connections between staff and students.

“I am incredibly honored and humbled to be receiving the Educator of the Year award,” Touloumian said in a statement. She emphasized the privilege of impacting children’s education, describing it as “the greatest gift.”

Prior to her current role, Touloumian served as principal of Eliot Arts Magnet Academy from 2015 to 2021. There, she led efforts to revitalize the campus with visual and performing arts programs and establish strong community partnerships.

In 2018, Touloumian was named Pasadena Unified School District’s Principal of the Year for her achievements at Eliot Arts Magnet Academy. She has also spearheaded District-wide initiatives, including the annual Women’s History Month celebration and Eliot Science Night.

The Congressional Leadership of the Year Awards, hosted annually by Congresswoman Chu, recognizes outstanding local leaders and organizations in California’s 28th Congressional District. Other honorees at the 2024 ceremony included Bradon Tsay, Cancer Support Community Greater San Gabriel Valley, Flintridge Center, Ed Donnelly, Joey Galloway, Randy Lopez, SGV LGBTQ Center, and Sophia Lee.
