A new study of racial and ethnic diversity published Wednesday ranked Pasadena as the 12th most diverse midsize city in the United States, and the 32nd in the nation overall, regardless of size.

The study by insurance company AdvisorSmith examined data from the U.S. Census Bureau to compile its listing, according to company spokeswoman Brenda Franco. Cities were divided into categories of small, with less than 150,000 residents; medium, with 150,000 to 500,000 residents; and large, with populations above 500,000.

Pasadena was the No. 12 most diverse midsize city, beating out San Mateo (No. 15), Berkeley (No. 16), and Torrance (No. 17),” she said in a written statement.

The breakdown in Pasadena was recorded as 45 percent white, 36 percent Hispanic or Latino, 20 percent “other,” 19 percent Asian, 9 percent Black or African American, 6 percent multicultural, .3 percent Native American and .1 percent Pacific Islander, Franco said.

As to the methodology, “We studied data for 607 cities from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey to highlight the cities that have the most diversity based on the Census Bureau’s seven major categories for race, along with Hispanic or Latino origin,” AdvisorSmith said in a statement. “We used the proportion of each city’s population that identifies with these characteristics in order to develop a Diversity Score, which we used to determine the cities with the most diverse.”

Seven of the 15 most diverse medium size cities in the U.S. were found to be in California, she added. The most diverse medium size city was Vallejo, which was listed as second overall.

The most diverse city in the nation without regard to size was Oakland, followed by Vallejo. Jersey City, New Jersey; Federal Way, Washington; Kent, Washington; Gaithersburg, Maryland; Silver Spring, Maryland; Sacramento; New York City; and Hayward California rounded out the top 10 spots.
