Public health officials in Pasadena reported three new COVID-19 cases on Monday but no new fatalities, marking five straight days without a reported death.

The city’s average daily infections over the prior week remained relatively stable at 7.3, according to city data.

And although the statistics were encouraging, city Public Information Officer Lisa Derderian said officials were carefully watching trends.

“With holidays approaching and spring break vacations, we need to keep our guard up because a majority of this college population hasn’t been vaccinated and we can see our numbers significantly increase if we’re not careful,” Derderian said.

Huntington Hospital reported treating 16 COVID-19 patients on Monday. Only one of them was being treated in an intensive care unit.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health reported 378 new infections and seven deaths on Monday, raising countywide totals to 1,218,583 known cases of the virus and 23,084 known infections.

Just over 650 COVID-19 patients were being treated at hospitals throughout the county, with 27% of them in intensive care units, the agency said in a written statement.

L.A. County Director of Public Health Barbara Ferrer used the occasion of César Chavez Day to speak of the importance of protecting workers against the pandemic.

“As we celebrate today the legacy of César Chavez and his commitment to social justice and the labor movement, let us honor all of the county’s workforce, particularly our essential workers, by protecting them from COVID-19,” Ferrer said.

“Every time the virus is passed from one person to another, community transmission increases along with the possibility of proliferation of variants,” according to Ferrer. “Let today serve as [a] reminder how critical it is for employers to support their workers by following all safety measures, providing maximum protection, and allowing for eligible workers to get vaccinated.”

State public health officials announced 2,277 new infections and 32 new deaths on Monday.

The statewide average positivity rate over the prior week was 1.6%, according to the California Department of Public Health.

As of Monday, L.A. County represented 34% of California’s COVID-19 infections and 40% of the state’s deaths.
