Pasadena saw 49 new COVID-19 infections Tuesday, as the virus continued to spread through the county and the state at unprecedented levels, authorities said.

The new cases brought the city’s total documented infections to 3,454, according to city data. With no new fatalities reported, the local death toll remained at 132.

Pasadena’s 7-day average number of new cases rose to 43.7 on Monday and 42 on Tuesday — the two highest-ever daily averages since the pandemic began.

Huntington Hospital reported treating 43 COVID-19 patients on Tuesday.

At the Los Angeles County level, public health officials announced 3,692 new infections and 51 additional fatalities.

“This is the highest number of deaths reported since Sept. 9,” the L.A. County Department of Public Health said in a written statement.

A total of 374,134 infections and 7,497 deaths have been documented in the county.

“COVID-19 hospitalizations continue to accelerate at alarming speed,” the statement said. “The increases in cases and hospitalizations must slow to avoid overwhelming our hospitals and healthcare staff, and save lives.”

Officials reported 1,575 patients hospitalized with COVID-19 county-wide on Tuesday, with 26 percent of them being treated in intensive care units

After remaining at 9 percent for “many weeks,” the county’s positivity rate had climbed back up to 10 percent, officials said.

“People mixing with others not in their household has driven the COVID-19 pandemic in L.A. County to dangerous levels,” said L.A. County Director of Public Health Barbara Ferrer.

“Because L.A. County reached a five-day average case rate over 4,500 new cases Public Health is working with the Board of Supervisors on additional safety measures to reduce transmission of the virus,” Ferrer said.

“Public Health is recommending that gatherings only occur with members of your own household and occupancy at all sites be reduced to avoid crowding,” she said.

California Department of Public Health officials reported 15,329 new infections and 43 deaths on Tuesday, bringing the state’s totals to 1,125,699 cases of COVID-19 and 18,768 deaths.

The average positivity rate over the prior 14 days had increased to 5.6 percent, marking a 1.8 percent jump from two weeks ago, state health officials said.

As of Tuesday, L.A. County accounted for 33 percent of California’s COVID-19 infections and 42 percent of the state’s fatalities.
