Pasadena Royals Celebrate City’s Most Cherished Tradition, Hours Before Search for 100th Rose Queen Begins

Published on Saturday, September 9, 2017 | 5:08 am

Friday night, the evening before the Tournament of Roses begins its search for the 100th Rose Queen and the 2018 Royal Court, about two dozen past Queens and Princesses gathered with a supportive crowd to celebrate their royal heritage at the opening of Pasadena Museum of History’s new exhibition, Royals of Pasadena.

The royalty was joined by Pasadena Museum patrons, Tournament of Roses Association officials, volunteers and their friends and family in touring the exhibition and the following party.

This unique exhibition explores the traditions and history of the Royal Court, from the selection process to the Rose Queen Coronation, to riding on a float in the Rose Parade, and is an up close look at fashion throughout the decades.

Exquisite gowns of past Rose Queens and Princesses are on display, from the sleek satin gowns of the 1940s to the tulle confections of William Cahill in the 1950s and 60s, and the modern-day glamour of Tadashi Shoji, the elegance of the Royal Court is feted.

Vivid photos and ephemera document this century-long Pasadena of tradition, as well as daywear, accessories, and jewelry from the Court wardrobes, generously on loan from former members of the Royal Court.

Special highlights include Queen’s crowns from the past century, on loan from the Tournament of Roses, and the gown of 1940 Rose Queen Margaret Huntley Main, the oldest living Rose Queen.

Royals of Pasadena will be on view from September 2, 2017 through February 11, 2018. The exhibitions galleries will be open 12:00 to 5:00 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays. Please check the PMH website at www.pasadenahistory.org for information about exhibit-related programs and special holiday hours.
