The Pasadena Unified School District Board of Education is planning to implement new strategies to improve its overall goal of improving board communication systems with the public.

Among the plans discussed by the board on Thursday, May 12, is development of a column space on the PUSD website where board members can write feature articles to drive more people to the website and to get the information out to the public. The content of the articles is yet to be determined.

PUSD President Elizabeth Pomeroy said the plan will help improve the board’s communications with the public “so people will get to know us and what we are doing and what our initiatives are.”

The board is also planning for Board Members to speak at City Council district meetings and hold community forums in the community.

In addition, the PUSD board is also planning to hold community forums in teams, raise board presence at public events and represent the board in booths at public places.

Pomeroy and board member Jennifer Hall Lee remarked that students could staff the booth as part of their community service.

“We can go to the superintendent and say this is something that should be in the community service list of options. I think we will reap some great benefits from this,” Hall Lee said.

Further details as to how the board will implement all of its plans were not provided but the board identified resources that are needed for the implementation which include support from PUSD staff, board members that will write articles consistently for the website and coordination with City Council members field representatives, among others.

“I think it’s pretty clear as we said with our first set of goals that some of us will do some of these things and others will do others and together we will create a good strong communication network with the public,” Pomeroy said.

Aside from the goal to improve its communication systems to further reach the community, another “self-improvement” goal PUSD has set is to “build trust between board members.”

According to the staff report, the board will do this by increasing the number of meetings and interactions between board members, conducting pre and post assessment of board relationships, attending community meetings together and increasing opportunities for bonding outside of board events, among other activities.
