Public health officials in Pasadena reported 186 new COVID-19 infections, representing the third-highest daily count ever, along with one new death on Monday.

The city had tallied a total of 7,196 cases of the virus and 168 deaths.

Huntington Hospital reported treating 190 COVID-19 patients on Monday, with 41 of them in intensive care units.

Los Angeles County Director of Public Health Barbara Ferrer reported 9,142 new infections and 77 additional deaths Monday, but added that data was being delayed due to the New Year’s holiday.

The new figures raised the county’s totals to 827,498 infections and 9,142 fatalities.

Just under 7,700 patients were hospitalized with COVID-19 throughout the county, Ferrer said. Twenty-percent of them were being treated in ICUs, and of those, 19% were being treated on ventilators.

The state-calculated ICU availability rate for the 11-county region encompassing L.A. County remained at 0%, according to state data.

L.A. County Health Services reported 577 total available hospital beds at county hospitals, and 47 ICU beds.

As cases related to recent holidays gatherings continue to pour in, “We’re likely to experience the worst conditions in January that we’ve faced the entire pandemic, and that’s hard to imagine,” Ferrer warned.

With nearly one in five people who are being tested receiving positive results, “You run the risk of an exposure whenever you leave your home,” according to Ferrer. “Assume that this deadly, invisible virus is everywhere, looking for a willing host. Don’t let that be you or someone you care about.

“It’s better to be lonely than to be sick. It’s better to care for others by following the rules than passing along the virus to someone else who may get hospitalized and even die,” she said.

At the state level, the California Department of Public Health reported 29,633 new infections and 97 additional deaths.

The state’s average positivity rate over the prior seven days was recorded at 13.3%, and the 14-day average was 12.4%, according to a CDPH statement.

As of Monday, L.A. County represented 34% of California’s positive COVID-19 cases and 37% of the state’s fatalities.
