Pasadena saw a new record number of COVID-19 infections at 93 on Friday, exceeding the previous record set in May by 16%, officials said.

One new death was reported, described as that of a person living in a senior living facility, city spokeswoman Lisa Derderian said.

Derderian said county officials had reported a figure of 100 new cases earlier in the day. The reason for the discrepancy was not clear Friday evening.

Since the onset of the pandemic, a total of 3,968 cases of the virus and 136 fatalities have been documented in Pasadena, city data shows.

Derderian said Friday’s “unprecedented” figures were likely largely due to gatherings during the recent holiday.

“We continue to see Thanksgiving gathering cases and expect them to increase daily,” she said.

“The peaks are people in their 20s and 50s to 60s,” Derderian said. Public health officials suspected the bulk of the cases were adult children and their parents.

Prior to Friday, the city’s highest-ever single-day case count was 80 on May 20, which officials said was artificially inflated due to backlogged data.

The city’s average daily infections over the prior seven days also reached an all-time high of 53.4.

Huntington Hospital reported treating 69 COVID-19 patients on Friday. The facility also reported its highest-ever seven-day average of daily COVID-19 admissions at 9.1.

The hospital said 1,996 people have tested positive for COVID-19 out of 24,250 tests it has conducted for a positivity rate of 8.2%.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health also reported a record number of infections Friday at 8,860, along with 60 new deaths.

Friday’s count easily exceeded the previous record high of  7,854 cases, set Thursday.

Officials had documented a total of 430,583 COVID-19 infections and 7,842 fatalities in L.A. County.

The number of patients hospitalized with the virus across the county also set a record for the fourth straight day at 2,668, the L.A. County Department of Public Health said in a written statement.

“This is a doubling from two weeks ago when daily hospitalizations were 1,298,” the statement said. Twenty-four percent of the hospitalized patients — or 640 people — were being treated in intensive care units.

L.A. County Director of Public Health Barbara Ferrer cautioned that the worst days may be still ahead.

“Los Angeles County continues to experience a pandemic that is moving in a direction that will cause significantly more suffering and deaths,” she said. “As case numbers and hospitalizations continue to rapidly increase, the number of individuals who will experience severe health outcomes will also increase.”

“The best thing to do right now and in the upcoming holiday season is to stay at home and not travel,” according to Ferrer. “Encourage your family and friends to stay connected virtually and delay meeting in person until we are at a better place in the pandemic. Collectively, we have a chance to slow the spread and save lives.”

At the state level, public health officials announced a new record of  22,018 new infections and145 new deaths, raising the overall totals to 1,286,557 COVID-19 cases and 19,582 fatalities.

The state’s average positivity rate over the prior 14 days had reached 7.3%

7.3% 14-day average, according to the California Department of Public Health.

As of Friday, L.A. County represented 33% of California’s COVID-19 infections and 40% of the state’s fatalities.
