Pasadena Unified Discusses Plan for Reopening Schools

The Pasadena Unified School District hosted a “virtual parent forum” Monday to discuss how schools might go about reopening following closures prompted by the coronavirus pandemic.

The meeting focused on what school may look like once the summer draw to a close. At the core, the issue revolves around how much instruction will be done remotely and how much will be in-person.

In an email, the district called community response at the meeting “tremendous.”

“We are compiling more than 450 comments and questions and are excited to refine our proposed plan with your feedback,” according to the email.

The meeting suffered technical difficulties, and not all who wanted to participate were able to join in. The PUSD has made recordings of the meeting available in both English and Spanish on its website.

“While the COVID-19 pandemic has presented unprecedented challenges and prompted major changes to daily life, it also presents a chance for improvement,” Pasadena Unified Chief Human Resources OfficerSteven Miller said.

“This is a historic opportunity to make long-lasting, positive changes for our students. In fact, we are in the new normal,” he said.

A poll distributed online by the district received more than 7,700 responses from parents, officials said.

About 55.5 percent of parents said they would be willing to have their children attend in-person classes, with social distancing and safety precautions in place. About 15.5 percent of respondents said they would not, and about 29 percent were unsure.

Officials said 51.7 percent of parents were in support of entirely virtual learning for the children. Just over 26 percent said they did not approve of distance learning only, and 22.2 percent were unsure.

The most preferred method was a mixture of continued remote learning, coupled with in-person instruction, with 57.2 percent of respondents favorable. About 17.4 percent of parents did not support it, and 25.5 percent were undecided.

The forum also went over measures that could be done to help make students as safe as possible when they do return to school. Reinforcing the importance of hand-washing, establishing mobile hand-washing stations, training staff, educating parents, disinfection and improving ventilation were discussed, along with how measures might different at the elementary, middle school and high school levels.

More information is available on the PUSD website. Parents were urged to continue submitting comments and questions online:
