In the final phase of a return which began a week ago,  Pasadena Unified students in grades 3-5 along with middle and high schoolers begin returning to PUSD campuses this morning, after more than 13 months of online learning.

As with the previous group of returning preschool-2nd grade students, students will be on campuses for limited days a week for limited hours, owing to COVID restrictions. Students will also return to campus in “cohorts,” small groups of students in similar grades.

According to a PUSD statement issued Monday, the district is also offering in-person learning as an option for all students, “so families can determine which setting is most beneficial for their student.

“We have worked closely with the Pasadena Department of Public Health and follow the safety guidelines provided by them, CPHD and CDC,” the district said in a statement.

PUSD is also using assessment results from its District interim assessments (iReady, HMRI) to help assess students’ academic needs.

Plans for an expanded summer program to include all grade levels are also in progress, the District said.

“Additionally, longitudinal planning for the next few years will take into account learning acceleration for gaps that occurred in the past,” the statement noted.

State testing will be required in 2020-21, per the California Department of Education (CDE), which is currently awaiting confirmation from the US Department of Education.

Once confirmed, this will be communicated to all involved, said PUSD.

PUSD also announced Monday that District high school 2021 class graduations will be held in person, at the Pasadena Rose Bowl—with safety measures in place e, at two combined ceres on June 4, 2021.

As PUSD leadership noted in a statement Monday, “We are making every effort to make this important rite of passage as special as possible for graduates while adhering to COVID-19 safety measures. During the pandemic, we learned how important it is to come together as one community to support and celebrate our students.”

The  goal of the combined graduations is to ensure that every graduate has an opportunity to receive their diploma in person and that parents/guardians can be present, said PUSD.

Each graduate will be allowed to invite up to four guests from the same household.

Safety measures will also be in place, such as wearing masks, physical spacing, and advance registration for the event.

More information about graduation schedules, tickets, will be provided by PUSD over the coming weeks Meanwhile promotion ceremonies for middle and elementary school students are being planned as car parades.
