High school seniors in Pasadena have been given a second chance to secure funds for their college education, as Pasadena Water and Power extends the deadline for its annual Educational Scholarship to April 19, 2024.

The scholarship, which awards a first-place prize of $5,000 and a second-place prize of $2,500 to outstanding high school seniors in Pasadena, is designed to support students planning to enroll as full-time students in a two- or four-year accredited post-secondary institution in the upcoming academic year.

To be eligible, applicants must currently be a senior at a high school in the City of Pasadena, provide academic transcripts, and reside within the Pasadena Water and Power territory. As part of the application process, students are required to write a minimum 500-word essay about a topic related to the utility industry.

“If you haven’t submitted your application, now is your last chance to earn up to $5,000 toward your college education,” Pasadena Water and Power said in a statement. “Apply now at PWPweb.com/Scholarship.”

The 2024 Educational Scholarship Program essay prompt asks applicants to consider the role electricity plays in their lives, community, and the world, and to envision what the future could look like as the world continues to become more electrified. The prompt encourages students to think about the benefits and challenges of electrification, as well as the incentives and programs Pasadena Water and Power offers regarding electrification and how the utility has addressed the increased demand for electricity.

Last year’s scholarship winners, Dario Soatto and Anton Perez, demonstrated the diverse academic interests and ambitious goals of Pasadena’s high school seniors. Soatto, a senior at Polytechnic School, plans to attend Stanford University in the fall to study economics and political science, while Perez, a senior at Pasadena High School, will attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to double major in mathematics and philosophy.
