Pasadenans No Longer ‘Kept in Dark’ During Outages with Pasadena Water & Power’s New Power Outage Management System

After Pasadena households were kept in the dark both figuratively and literally during a savage November 2011 windstorm that downed thousands of trees throughout the city and caused widespread outages, planners at the Pasadena Water & Power Department went to work to create a new and better system to handle unplanned outages.

The department’s new Outage Management System will provide customers with timely and consistent information on planned and unplanned power outages and will notify them of restoration efforts in the area.

“The new system is going to be a way for us to increase not only our communications with our customers in times of outages, but also our accuracy in deploying line personnel” said Wendy De Leon of Pasadena Water & Power Department.

The new system will also hasten troubleshooting in affected areas through the Integrated Interactive Voice Response that will analyze direct input from customers to predict the location of power outages. The historical data of the reported outages will also help the department identify areas with recurring power interruptions.

In addition, the customers will also be given the option for a call back from the Department’s customer representatives during outages.

De Leon said that customers will be able to avail these services by updating their contact information, including home and mobile phone numbers, that may be used during an outage. “It’s important for all PWP customers to update their contact information, including home and mobile phone numbers to give PWP the ability to pinpoint your location and accurately dispatch personnel to the area affected by an outage,” De Leon said.

Pasadena Water & Power’s new and upgraded system is scheduled to launch by early 2014.
