Pasadena’s Electrical Grid Holding Up Under Extra Demand During High Heat

Published on Friday, July 6, 2018 | 9:43 am

Pasadena City officials have reported no power system failures today as the heat shoots up into triple digits.

Department spokesperson Margie Otto said that “PWP is closely monitoring the high heat temperatures and have put measures in place to maintain electric system reliability. With the added benefit of Pasadena having its own power plant, PWP will be operating most of its units to generate power to meet our community’s needs and to support the state’s needs by putting power back into the grid.”

Otto said PWP has staged transformers and other restoration equipment to be ready for easy deployment if needed. She said that additional crews are on standby in case they need to be called into work.

Otto said that energy conservation is always important and can make a difference on high heat days: waiting to do a load of laundry until after 7 p.m., or charging electric vehicles in the late evening, to name a few.

The community is reminded to go to cooling locations to help beat the heat. Locations include the libraries, community centers and our local ice skating rink, she said.
