The Edwin J. Gregson Foundation recently celebrated the graduation of its 2024 English as a Second Language class at Santa Anita Park.
“Grooms and hot walkers from various stables faithfully attended the twice weekly courses with Instructor Alejandro Garza, the Foundation said.
The foundation, established in 1998 by the California Thoroughbred Trainers (CTT) Board, is dedicated to supporting the educational and charitable needs of backstretch workers in the California thoroughbred horse racing industry and their families. It was named after Edwin J. Gregson, a veteran trainer and past CTT president who played a pivotal role in its creation.
Foundation President Jenine Sahadi, a prominent thoroughbred trainer, oversees the organization’s efforts. The foundation provides scholarships and resources to support higher education for backstretch workers and their families, particularly targeting children of eligible workers.
Eligibility for the foundation’s scholarship program includes holding a current California Horse Racing Board license. Applicants must work in occupations directly related to horse care, such as grooming, hot walking, or exercising horses.
The foundation awards scholarships based on financial need, academic achievement, and future potential. Applicants must provide letters of recommendation and proof of enrollment in an eligible educational program. Funds can be used for various educational expenses, including tuition, fees, and books.
The foundation has supported students attending prestigious institutions like the University of California and Stanford. It continues to be recognized for its contributions, including being honored at events like the NTWAB Fall Dinner.
