PCC Women’s Swim Attains 13 All-American Marks

The Pasadena City College women’s swim team picked up 2014 All-American honors in 13 separate events, including four relays, at the recently released Community College All-American lists. The top 16 fastest times for all of the nation’s community colleges qualify for the honors.

Sophomore Shannon Cheung had the second fastest time in the nation with her state champion swim of 17 minutes, 34.25 seconds in the 1,650-yard freestyle. Cheung also was a state champ in the 200 individual medley where her 2:06.89 time put her third nationally in the event. Cheung was fourth best in the 500 freestyle at 5:06.28. In all, Cheung was All-American in seven events.

Freshman Connie Peng had No. 4 USA times in the 100 backstroke (57.88) and 100 butterfly (58.56) while placing sixth in the 50 backstroke at 27.06. Peng matched Cheung’s seven All-American honors.

Sophomore Arolyn Basham also joined the seven All-American group by placing No. 6 in the 100 IM (1:01.04), No. 8 in the 50 breaststroke (30.62), and No. 12 in the 100 breaststroke at 1:07.55.

Cheung, Peng, Basham and freshman Tiffany Wong were together on the other four All-American relay swims. The 400 medley relay was fifth (3:58.94), the 200 medley relay sixth (1:48.68), the 200 freestyle relay seventh (1:39.62) and the 400 freestyle relay was eighth (3:38.81).

The Lancers finished sixth at the CCCAA State Championships, the highest finish in the program’s history.
