Planetary Society’s Chief “Science Guy” Bill Nye Slated to Star in New TV Show

Bill Nye, CEO and “front man” of the Pasadena-based Planetary Society, is rekindling his “Science Guy” persona from the 90s as he’s slated to star in a new science TV show set to hit premiere next spring.

The show, called “Bill Nye Saves the World,” will see each episode take on a hot topic from a scientific point of view, debunking myths and pseudoscientific claims along the way that may be espoused by politicians, corporate leaders or religious figures, according to the show’s official synopsis revealed by Netflix.

In a 2015 interview with the Denver Post, Nye discussed the seeds he’d planted in the millennial population which have made him popular and actually given him a chance to save the world.

“Millennials are all grown up, and we have a whole new generation of kids watching the show in school. This of course was my goal, to change the world and so on, but to see it actually happen is a bit spooky,” Nye said in the interview.

Here in Pasadena, Nye is the face of the Planetary Society, which recently moved into new headquarters on the northeast corner of East Green Street and South Los Robles Avenue.

The Society sponsors projects that will seed innovative space technologies, nurtures creative young minds, and is a vital advocate for humankind’s future in space.

Nye, a graduate of Cornell University who became a household icon for making science cool and accessible to kids with his hit TV show “Bill Nye the Science Guy,” was introduced to astronomy by Carl Sagan, a famed scientist and one of the original members of The Planetary Society, according to their website.

Netflix has promised to keep Nye’s “unfiltered style” while using scientific experiments and interviews with prominent scientists to educate viewers on topics such as GMOs and climate change, according to The Denver Post.
