Police Plan Crackdown on Distracted Driving Friday

Extra police officers will be out on patrol Friday with the specific goal of finding distracted drivers, such as those using cell phones while driving, officials said.

The campaign will take place citywide, Pasadena police said in a written statement.

“Distracted driving is a serious issue, but one that can be easily solved simply by putting the phone down and away from you while driving,” Cmdr. Mark Goodman said. “That text, phone call, email or social media post can wait.”

California law does not allow drivers to manipulate mobile devices with their hands while on the road. A first offense can carry a fine of $157.

Other forms of distracted driving can include grooming, talking to passengers, adjusting stereos, and taking off a jacket, police said.

Friday’s operation is being funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
