Police Plan Friday Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Operation Plan

The Pasadena Police Department announced it will conduct a bicycle and pedestrian safety traffic enforcement operation on Friday targeting dangerous driving behaviors that put vulnerable road users at risk.

The department said the operation will focus on drivers speeding, making illegal turns, failing to yield the right-of-way to bicyclists and pedestrians at intersections and crosswalks, and disregarding stop signs and signals.

“We all have places to be and not everyone gets there by car,” Lt. Anthony Russo said. “Bicyclists and pedestrians have the same rights to the road but face even more risk without the protections vehicles have. We should all be looking out for one another.”

Police offered tips for pedestrians, bicyclists and drivers to reduce crashes and injuries:

• PEDESTRIANS: Use crosswalks when available; watch for vehicles; wear bright clothing or reflectors, especially at night; don’t walk or run into traffic.

• DRIVERS: Follow speed limits; prepare to stop for pedestrians; don’t block crosswalks; never drive impaired.

• BICYCLISTS: Obey traffic laws; use lights and helmets; travel in the direction of traffic; yield to pedestrians in crosswalks.

The enforcement operation is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
