Political Gumbo: Rose Colored Thoughts

Published on Monday, December 5, 2022 | 5:00 am

As we reported on Wednesday night, the Tournament of Roses and the College Football Playoffs (CFP) came to terms Wednesday night that includes the Rose Bowl Game as part of the expansion.

First off, big thanks for the calls and texts on the Rose Bowl Game coverage.

So far the terms are not known, that includes the local share of the $450 million media deal to broadcast the game.

But anybody thinking the terms will remain a secret needs to take off their rose colored glasses.

People love to talk about money and deals.

It will be reported before the first game under the new deal.

Bank on it, but don’t bet $450 million on it.

Here’s the bottom line, despite the ultimatums and posturing, the CFP expansion loses some of its importance and swag without the oldest and yes, most prestigious, bowl game attached to it.

There’s a reason they didn’t negotiate with the organizers of the Pinstripe Bowl or the Viagra Bowl.

Okay, maybe the Viagra Bowl is not a thing, but the Pinstripe Bowl is.

A bunch of the bowls should just be called the No bowls.

No tradition, no prestige and no one cares.

Matter of fact, they would probably cut a deal for $2.57 with the House of Falardeau at Pasadena Media just to get a media deal.

And they would have to pay the $2.57.

All the claims that college football needs to move on from tradition are bogus.

Mayor Victor Gordo was right when he told Pasadena Now that no College Football Playoff is complete without the ‘Grandaddy of Them All.’

By the way, Mayor Gordo and the City Council were not part of the negotiations.

But there was a meeting on Wednesday night between the Tournament and the City.

Respect to both sides for coming together to discuss the matter.

The reality is the drama and lawsuit over who owns what after the CFP disrespected years of tradition and moved the game to Arlington, TX during the pandemic caused a serious rift between the two sides.

After that mess, I am wait and see on anything to do with the CFP, and no that rhyme was not on purpose.

The bottom line is this, we won’t know what the CFP deal really looks like until 2024.

We’ll see.

Tradition matters.
