An armed carjacking suspect was shot and killed by Pasadena police after he drove at them in an allegedly stolen vehicle in the parking lot of a strip mall on Orange Grove Blvd. near the intersection with N. Lake Avenue at about 2:25 a.m. Saturday, according to police and witnesses.

Videos appear to show a man holding a gun to his head and lurching forward in a battered white minivan towards officers, who instantly return fire.

Pasadena police Lt. Carlo Montiglio confirmed the suspect was killed.

CBS News reported that earlier the suspect had driven the wrong way on the 210 Foothill freeway and was tracked by both Monrovia and Pasadena police, who pursued him when he exited the freeway.

The suspect might also have been connected to an earlier crash involving a sheriff’s deputy in Rosemead.

Deputies in South El Monte spotted a stolen vehicle at about 1:50 a.m. in the area of Rosemead Boulevard and Garvey Avenue, which triggered a four- minute pursuit that ended on the northbound San Gabriel River (605) Freeway at the San Bernardino (10) Freeway in Baldwin Park, according to a watch commander at the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Temple station.

A deputy in a patrol vehicle, en route to assist in the pursuit, was involved in a two-vehicle crash at Rosemead Boulevard and Glendon Way in Rosemead, she said. The deputy suffered minor injuries and was taken to a hospital, where he was expected to be released sometime Saturday.

Police investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting closed lanes near the intersection of N. Lake and Orange Grove Blvd. for much of Saturday morning and possibly afternoon. Lake Ave. remained open southbound, but northbound was closed at Orange Grove. Orange Grove westbound was closed at Mentor Ave. There was no northbound turning from Orange Grove onto Lake Ave. allowed. Eastbound Orange Grove remained open. Stores in the strip mall where the shooting took place stayed closed, as was a Walgreen across the street.

The motorist in the other vehicle suffered minor injuries and was not hospitalized.

The watch commander at the sheriff’s Temple station referred all inquiries to the Pasadena Police Department when asked if the suspect in South El Monte was the same man who was shot dead at the end of the pursuit in Pasadena.

The identity of the dead suspect has not been released.

No Pasadena police officers were injured during this incident, according to a press release.

Detectives from the Pasadena Police Department’s Robbery / Homicide Unit responded to the crime scene to commence an immediate follow-up investigation.

Pasadena police said the investigation is very preliminary at this point and more details will be provided as soon as available.

Nearby stores, including a Walgreens across the street, remained closed Saturday morning.
