Pasadena Unified School District Board of Education is set to approve a resolution praising “Nutrition, Health and Walk to School Week†which is celebrated annually by Altadena, Cleveland, Webster, Madison and Willard schools and this will be held October 3 through October 7.
Simultaneous events across California, the United States, and other parts of the globe will be held during the week to focus on the benefits of walking rather than driving to school, creating cleaner, safer, and environmentally healthier school routes for children.
The Board also encourages parents to spend more time with their children during the “Nutrition, Health and Walk to School Week,” which also aims to reduce car use and traffic hazards, promotes physical activity, and contributes to a safer community.
The Walk to School campaign is run by charity Living streets. The Partnership for a Walkable America sponsored the first National Walk Our Children to School Day in Chicago, in 1997, modeled after the United Kingdom’s Walk to School Campaign which began in 1995.
The initaitive quickly grew and by 2002, children, parents, teachers and community leaders in all 50 states joined nearly three million walkers around the world to celebrate the second annual International Walk to School Day.
