PWP Virtual Education Website Offers New Programs to Local Students

The city is offering new programs to children that include lessons on conserving water, as well as audio, activity sheets, and an animated short film, according to a memo to Steve Mermell from Pasadena Water and Power General Manager Gurcharan Bawa.

“As a community-owned utility, PWP wanted to offer interactive and engagement tools for teachers, parents and students to help learn the benefits of energy and water efficiency,” wrote Bawa.  

According to the memo, local students can learn about water conservation by following the adventures of Pasadena’s favorite family, the Outtawattas.

The lesson will guide students through water conservation and  where PWP’s water comes from through an interactive picture book and an animated short film.

The activity sheets for students and teachers include coloring pages and word searches. 

PWP has also recorded four new storytimes for students to watch and listen to.

Every year, PWP provides energy and water-efficient education to Pasadena students through three unique programs: “Green Living” for second graders in the Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD); “Children Investigate the Environment,” which provides hands-on learning and field trips to fourth-graders in PUSD; and “Living Wise” for sixth-grade students that attend private schools and schools in the PUSD. 

In response to distance learning that has kept students at home since the pandemic began, PWP has worked to revamp its educational programs to offer additional curriculum to support the virtual learning environment. 

In addition to restructuring these three programs to provide teachers with easy to utilize online curriculum, PWP created the new virtual education resources to ensure Pasadena students still receive creative, utility-sponsored curriculum about water and power subjects.
